Victory vs Wellington 3,2,1.

Well what an unbelievable finish to the regular A - League season. Wellington were so unlucky not to get anything out of that match and in our view that was football injustice in its highest form. If Victory are going to challenge for the A - League Grand Final then that defence needs some work and quickly.

Heres our 3,2,1 man of the match awards for the nail biter in windy Wellington.

3. Jeremy Brockie

Great game from the Wellington striker, he was desperate to steal the golden boot from Daniel McBreen today and his desperation showed. Whoever the new Phoenix coach is, Brockie will be an integral part of the Nix side next season.

2. Nathan Coe

Another poor performance from the Victory defence, Nathan Coe kept the Victory in the match this afternoon. He's proving to be one of their most important purchases this year after all.

1. Jason Geria

Young Jason was the only shining light in the Melbourne backline, his pace is electric and his defence is solid. Looks to be a solid pick up from Brisbane Roar.

A sit down with Andrew Barisic

Andrew Barisic has achieved what many young football fans only dream of. Eight years living the life of a professional footballer, stints in Europe, Asia and our very own A - League is a big achievement for the 6 ft 2 striker from the nations capital. As we talk to Andrew via twitter and email from his base in Kolkata India, you just know he seems a nice guy. You sense that typical Croatian / Aussie mentality of never wanting to give up. You have to give it to Andrew for going outside his comfort zone, testing his ability in countries many of his peers would never entertain. We talk everything from Clive Palmer to India's I - League, I hope you all enjoy our chat with Andrew Barisic as much we did.

1. You started your career in the VPL with Melbourne Knights - why did you go the VPL and not the NSWPL being a Canberra boy ?.

After my return from my stint in Germany, I was approached straight away by Melbourne Knights through my agent. Due to it being a Croatian based club and my background being Croatian it felt like a perfect match. I was also drawn to Melbourne Knights through their history of previous players and the careers they had gone on to have.

2. In saying that we here tremendous things about the VPL?.

The VPL is definitely one of the best state leagues in Australia and a stepping stone to a Professional career.

3. You then moved to Germany, looking back was that the right move for you?.

I don’t regret the move as I gained a lot of experiences that I wouldn’t normally have experienced in Australia, such as the professionalism. At that stage of my move to Germany, there was a transition that wasn’t completely formed from NSL to the A-League which meant a one year break of professional football.

4. What do you think was the best thing you learnt in Germany?.

I was extremely fortunate to have Joe Simunic mentor me throughout my time in Germany. This gave me a completely different insight on football both on and off the field. He showed me many ways to handle the game professionally and mentally.

5. Then we all got to know you from your stint at Gold Coast United, there was a lot of talk about the club, as a player what was it really like, did you really use Clive's private jet for away games?.

I was really excited when I initially signed at GCU. My time there had a lot of highs and lows. We had a fantastic team of players that was capable of winning and succeeding greatly both on the Australian and Asian football stage. Off the field, things distracted the players and with not knowing their futures or standings for them and their families proved to be costly. We were lucky enough to use Mr Palmer jet both Internationally and Interstate for games and aspects like this made us feel very well looked after by Mr Palmer.

6. What did the players think about the support on the Gold Coast, was it hard to turn up for games sometimes?.

It is never hard to give your everything for a game and at that stage I was yet to play in Asia and realize true support for the game. Football has a lot of growing to do in Australia to reach a true fan based support, which I think western Sydney Wanderers is the only team that are fortunate to have this support at the moment.

7. Where do you think Clive and GCU went wrong?.

I believe there is a lot of misunderstanding of the politics of football off the field which in turn effects the football on the field.

8. What about the Mitch Cooper debacle did Miron get that wrong?.

At that time I had left to play in Indonesia and therefore did not see every aspect of what went on behind closed doors. As an outsider I thought the pressure given to such a young player as well as all the other drama at the club was a poor decision and not healthy for the players.

9. If done properly could An A- League team survive on the Gold Coast?.

Definitely.

10. Being a Canberra boy, could a A- League team in Canberra be successful?.

Definitely. I was actually extremely excited when the talk started of a Canberra A-League team. A lot of good players have come out of Canberra and it would be a fantastic opportunity to give back to the place where it all began for many.

11. Onto your time in Indonesia , you scored goals for fun did you enjoy your time there?.

After a hard time at GCU I was so happy and thankful to finally have a team believe in me and showcase my capabilities. This made it a happy time for me and aloud me to take my football to the next level.

12. What was Indonesia like to live?.

We were fortunate to be very well looked after by the club as well as playing in the second largest Indonesian city, therefore it was a fairly easy transition.

13. Now you play in India for the east Bengal Lions, we here great things about Indian football how does it compare to your previous clubs?.

The biggest difference between both my Indonesian and Indian club compared to my time in Australia is the loyalty and passion of the fans towards the game and players. As Sepp Blatter stated “Indian football is a sleeping giant”, which I agree with and am excited with talks of a football version of the IPL.

14. Culturally have you found it hard?.

At times it can definitely be challenging. One thing ive learnt in football is that it doesn’t matter if your playing in Germany or India, without family and your usual comforts of home it can always be difficult at times but you always have to do your best to adapt and be as comfortable and happy as possible so that you can enjoy the game you love and play your best.

15. There are a few Aussies plying there trade there now, it must be great as a professional footballer that there are more leagues available to you?.

Of course, with any profession the more opportunities there are the better off you will be in progressing your career.

16. Tolgay Ozbey has said he will most likely finish his career in India, are you on the same page as him?.

I am truly not sure as football can change daily. However, if Indian football keeps heading in the direction its following then that could definitely be an option.

17. If an A League team came in for you would you consider returning home?.

I would never rule any opportunity out, however from what I have experienced in Asia it provides a far better opportunity to set myself and my family up for the future.

18. Plans after football?.

I am extremely thankful that the PFA have provided a scholarship program that allows me to undergo my Building and Construction license that helps me to set myself up for a career outside of football. I think it extremely important for players to invest smartly in there futures after football. I am currently undergoing several projects to make my transition an easy one.

Andrew plays every three days in a packed schedule in India, insidetheboxFC would like to sincerely thank him for taking the time to answer our questions.

Roar vs Heart 3,2,1.

Great performance from the back to back champions tonight,  but disappointing crowd figure from the Brisbane public. The imports were on fire for the home side tonight, maybe rival A - League clubs should look at the Bundesliga 2 for scouting players?.

3. Thomas Broich

Wunderbar Thomas, probably the best the German has played this season. Hes back to creating alot of chances and scoring goals. He scored arguably the goal of the round, we just wish he would shoot more often. Well done Thomas you are our man of the match.

2. Ivan Franjic

If Matt Smith is in line for Socceroos call up then surely Ivan Franjic is not far behind. His link up play with the midfield was outstanding and if you don't shut him down on the right flank then your in trouble. Wonder if Ange would be interested in making a play for the Melbourne born right back.

1. Besart Berisha

Say what you want about the Albanian, but you cannot question his work ethic and passion he displays for his club. Berisha dont change your game, maybe just your haircut.

FAREWELL TO THE BOY WONDER

Last week’s announcement that 33 year old Michael Owen will retire from Football at the end of this Premier League season, left a deep sense of nostalgia in the hearts of many Football fans. After bursting on to the scene as a 17 year old with Liverpool back in 1997, Owen’s career went one step further when, 1 year later, he was the Joint Top Goalscorer of the 1997/98 FA Premier League season. But It was to be the World Cup in France that Summer which would really set him apart from his England peers. Having gained a considerable following in the Domestic competition for his finishing ability, many England fans were eager to see him represent his Country at the 1998 World Cup. After scoring a decisive goal in the 1-1 draw with Romania in the Group Stage, Owen cemented his place in the starting 11 for that tournament thereafter. But It was his goal against Argentina in the Knockout stages which really put this precocious Teenager on the map. Having run half the length of the field  and finishing it with a beautiful top corner shot, England it seemed were now favourites to win this bitter rivalry. 12 years earlier It was an Argentine who scored a wonder goal to put England out of the tournament, but at this tournament it appeared an 18 and a half year old would be the one to sink the mighty Argentines. After an Intense Shootout, Argentina walked away with the win, but nearly everyone went away from that match talking about this 18 year old kid from Liverpool.

Owen’s career was not to be just a flash in the pan however; his career went from strength to strength thereafter. Some of his most memorable achievements included the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 1998, 2 wonder goals in the 2001 FA Cup Final (which Liverpool won) and becoming the Ballon d’Or winner for 2001. Having left England in 2004 to pursue a (short lived) career with Real Madrid, Owen still managed to keep his spot in the England team even after coming back only a year later to join Newcastle United. His last International tournament with England was to be the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, a tournament where England were eliminated in the Quarter Finals on penalties by Portugal. After moving to Manchester United in 2009, many Football fans felt this would be Owen’s revival, the career boost he needed, however 3 years and only 31 Premier Leagues appearances later, the 32 year old was soon off to another club, this time to Stoke City. Having made only 6 Premier League appearances this year, most of the time plagued with injury, the last 6 years of Michael Owen’s career is a classic case of “What Might Have Been”. Although if we delve back further in time, we can certainly see what he was. In my eyes, he will always be the 18 year old kid who stole the hearts of Football fans around the World and the Kid who became only the Fourth Englishman to win the coveted Ballon d’Or Trophy. And when History looks back on him, he'll surely be remembered as being one of the Greatest finishers of his generation. Thanks for the memories Michael.

Football Gossip

With another brilliant football season coming to a close, we have searched the world wide web far and wide to find the juiciest football gossip doing the rounds. Here is what we found.......

West Ham United are eyeing Fulham goalkeeper Mark SchwarzerThe Aussie comes off contract in June and West Ham are keen on the 41 year old (Daily Express).
- Italian giants Inter Milan are interested in signing spurs winger Aaron Lennon, Alexis Sanchez is also on their radar. (Tribal Football)
-  Samir Nasri could join Paris St Germain in the summer, he has fallen out of favour in Manchester and a return to France is tipped. (The Sun)
- John Terry could be tempted to finish his career in the cashed up UAE pro League. (Daily Mirror)
- Former All Whites Defender Danny Hay is reportedly the front runner for the vacant Wellington Phoenix coaching role. (source)

Big Blue 3,2,1.

Well, that was probably the best game of the season. The Big Blue always serves up a thrilling game but we believe that was the best edition in recent seasons. Its not a surprise that both keepers are in our 3,2,1 man of the match awards but which outfielder makes the cut.

3. Nathan Coe

No surprises here with Coe taking out our man of the match for the Big Blue. Some very important saves not to mention the penalty save from Del Piero, Coe looked like he desperately wants back in the Socceroos squad.

2. Ivan Necevski

Fantastic game from big Ivan, with limited game preparation he pulled off hes best performance in a Sydney FC jumper in our opinion. Often he gets a hard time from FC fans but he shut them up tonight, well done Ivan.

1. Terry Antonis / Mark Milligan.

Both these boys had fantastic games for there respective clubs that we just couldn't split the two for our final spot on the list.

The curious case of Eddy Bosnar

Why haven't we seen this man in a Socceroo's jersey?.

Yes we know about his bust up with then national team coach Frank Farina, Eddy was young and the Socceroo's set up in those days was a bit of a joke. A second chance was missed when Eddy was called up by Pim Verbeek back in 2008, that was then this is now. A new coach is in charge and has been for 3 years, so Holger why have you tried many centre backs but not Eddy Bosnar. Robbie Cornthwaite now seems a regular Socceroo and although Robbie is a good player we believe that Eddy Bosnar is a better player and should be given a chance ahead of the likes of Cornthwaite , Micheal Thwaite and Dino Djubic. Any Socceroo fan knows the footballing pedigree of Eddy, there's no doubt that he is of the Socceroo quality but after four coaches and 13 years later the dream is looking even more slim for Edward. All staff here at insidethebox cant understand why he hasn't featured for our national side, not even once. So we need your help, via our twitter page we want to know.........

WHY HASN'T EDDY BOSNAR PLAYED FOR THE SOCCEROOS?.

Roar vs Victory 3,2,1.

A great game of football was played out at Suncorp Stadium last night, with both sides sharing the honours. Probably the best game the Brisbane Roar have played all season and really they should've  won.

Here are our 3,2,1 man of the match awards in last night's blockbuster at the cauldron.

3. Luke Brattan

Erik who?, Luke Brattan was fantastic last night and deservedly takes out our man of the match award. We've been saying for years that Luke Brattan is a massively under rated player and after finally gaining regular playing time, he looks to be one of the Roars most important players.

2. Ivan Franjic

Ivan had his best game in weeks last night, hes a player that Postecoglu probably wishes he took with him when he switched to the Victory this season. He showed that he is more than just a defender by nicely scoring the equalising goal.

1. Micheal Theo

No doubt he kept his side in the match with a number of saves. After an average season, Theo has recaptured his electric form which has seen him win an incredible four A - League championships. We will still never get our heads around is name change tho.

The North London Derby Review

After Mark Clattenburg's whistle blew to end the final six minutes of stoppage time, it could be said the home fans at White Hart Lane breathed a collective sigh of relief before any celebratory motions were conducted.

Whilst the victory meant Spurs continued the clubs yearly-undefeated streak, overtaking European champions Chelsea and cementing third place, Spurs fans had a completely different accolade on their mind. With the 2-1 win, Tottenham head into the final ten games of the season seven points ahead of their detested rivals, and in doing so have given the Blue and White folk of North London the best chance in 16 years of finally at seasons end, peering down at Arsenal.

Going into the match, recent contests between the two indicated towards a looming shoot-out of sorts. With the past years score lines more resemblant of a baseball match (the last two alone featuring 14 goals), a match possibly determined by the performance of keepers Lloris and Szczesny could have been expected.

Yet with Arsenal defending high up the park and Tottenham's four man defence assisted by two defensive midfielders, the aforementioned scores didn’t seem anywhere near eventuating.

Add muted performances of both side’s lone strikers, and for the first half hour the ambition of scoring nowhere near reward to other for the risk of conceding in such a hostile, significant fixture.

When Walker and Dawson weren't intersecting Wilshere's barrage of through balls from the edge of the box, Tottenham's midfield were showing no real determination to get behind a high defensive Arsenal line showing signs of vulnerability. On the rare occasions Arsenal did breakthrough, Giroud consistently erred on decisions with poor touches and mistimed shots creating no threat to fellow French international Lloris' goal. On the other end of the pitch Adebayor seemed more focused on injuring or getting injured. The striker earning jeers from both sides of the crowd after an obvious fall during a Spurs set piece, followed by a yellow card and a warning from Clattenburg that a red wasn’t far off for a dangerous tackle on Vermaelen.

Yet with a player of such talent and form as to be targeted for Real Madrid's post season revolution orchestrating play in the middle of the pitch, a score was always going to eventuate and in 36th minute White Hart Lane became a cauldron of noise.

Verthongen perhaps a little too easily swept through the midfield to expertly dissect the Arsenal defence and send a rushing Bale through on goal.

Though with only the keeper to beat, the Welshman still had it all to do. With his torso still turning to be faced on goal, a storming Szczesny coming at him from the front and Vermaelen steps behind, Bale had only a short amount of space and time to convert. Doing what he has all season however Bale found the net with a touch of upmost finesse, his left boot poking the ball through on goal, sending the crowd, and the ever growing hype surrounding his ability into raptures.

In a season that had provided, a loss to lower tier Bradford City and Blackburn Rovers, as well as a humbling at home to almost guarantee another round of 16 UCL knockout, whether or not the likelihood of seven points estranged from their bitter rivals could be considered Arsenal's fans low point is debatable. Regardless, that point would need to be refigured once more when Aaron Lennon, on the receiving end of a brilliant Parker through-ball went in on a goal identical to Bales opener, strolling past Szczesny for a second two minutes later.

At this point all momentum was with Spurs with the likelihood of a third before the half not all that implausible, Moussa Dembele in particular making a mockery of the Vermaelen led defence.

With the half ending in twenty pass Tottenham possession, to the tune of 'Spurs go Marching' in you could almost forgive the jubilant spurs fans for forgetting their was another forty-five minutes and celebrating as if the scoreline was conclusive.

Yet in the back of their minds surely retained was the fateful day last February when Spurs, holding the same lead capitulated to lose 5-2. Still scorned by rivals fans today, that famous Emirates collapse was a symbol (and believed beginning) for the tumultuous demise Spurs suffered during the final stages of last season ruining an almost certain Champions league spot and what was Harry Redknapp's beloved coaching tenure.

Such a nightmare would have only been further reiterated five minutes from the retstart when a malicious Walcott challenge on a storming Wilshere led to a free kick on the left of the penalty area. A resulting Mertesaker header (with a slight deflection from Bale) pulled one back for the Gunners, and the north western stands of the away section were loudest once again, as the crippling fear of another Hotspur collapse loomed large.

Yet, to most fans delight Arsenal's early resurgence didn't threaten AVB's men,
as Lennon and Dembele combined to constantly frustrate Vermaelen down the right wing. When Sigurdsson through on goal with only Szczesny to beat who mistakenly passed (further proving Bales skill in his earlier goal), it was fair to think it was Spurs chasing the elusive equaliser.

Brining Rosický on for Jenkinson, Arsenal did make one last concerted effort to tie things up, yet admirably Spurs hung on, Arsenal's attack just not determined, or skilled enough on the night to get past a Champions League worthy defence, that has earned its place in the higher realms of the EPL.

Where to for Arsenal from here is anyone’s guess. Take a full strength team to Bayern and hope for a modern miracle? Or accept another round of 16 knock out in the chase for fourth place and the chance take part again next year. To some the latter is fast becoming a redundant exercise, the argument being continuous qualification is just leading to continuous failure to reach anywhere near the later stages of the tournament.

For Tottenham the outlook is promising, undefeated in 12, a midfield led by the hottest player in the country and an undefeated record they haven’t matched in 28 years. Whether or not that can be maintained for final three months of the season is not certain, but for now, and evidently the past three months the pride of North London is most certainly, Blue and White.

FOR ARSENAL

WHOS HOT?

Jack Wilshere.

Further proving he is a definite future No.10 for club and country, he was a shining light for Arsenal providing chance after chance and a constant headache for Spurs on the edge of their box.

WHOS NOT?

Aaron Ramsey.

Constantly chasing never had any chance of taking Lennon's pace and resorted to poor fouls when beaten.

Per Mertesacker.

His second half goal was still not enough to hide his defensive incapability’s, too old and slow and to play in such a high defensive line.

FOR TOTTENHAM

WHO'S HOT?

Gareth Bale

The man is a revelation; even his mistakes were genius with many touches that resulted in lost possession on the cusp of brilliance almost creating certain goal scoring chances. How spurs hold onto him is going to be hard.

Moussa Dembele.

A constant source of attack in midfield he can shoot, cross or walk through two or three defenders before passing off to turn chances previously as hopeful into full blown attacking options.

WHOS NOT?

Emmanuelle Adebayor.

Unfocused, Uncaring, unprofessional. Doesn't seem to care about the match, or result instead focusing on petty feuds and a never-ending battle with Arsenal players and fans. Needs to go.

Player of the round - Round 23

Well, we are getting kind of sick of giving our player of the round award to Wanderers players but they are just too good at the moment. This week our player of the round goes to Nikolai Torpor -Stanley. Popa has worked on making his side's defence the best in the league and he has succeeded.  The Wanderers are so hard to get past and the difference to them at the start of the season, is they are now scoring goals. No doubt about it, the Wanderers are now title favourites.

Goal of the round: Alessandro Del Piero

Victory vs Jets 3,2,1.

Our Sunday afternoon match see's the Melbourne Victory bounce back from a losing streak by absolutely smashing the Newcastle Jets at Aami Park. Its not hard to work out that defence has been the issue for the A - League giants in the past few weeks, but today their defence was outstanding. The attack of Victory's will do its job as long as Melbourne keep their defence solid they will challenge for the tittle.

Below are our 3,2,1 Man of the Match awards for tonight's match.

3. Marco Rojas

Kiwi Messi was back to his best today, Archie Thompson returning from injury clearly brings out the best in young Marco and tonight he takes out our man of the match.

2. Adrian Leijer

Big Aido had his best game in the Victory shirt since that clash with the Mariners in Tasmania. He was strong and imposing on the Jets attack. Also combined the best with Daniel Mullen since his arrival from China.

1. Nathan Coe

Maybe seen as a strange choice as he wasn't overly busy this afternoon, but after last week he showed plenty of character to bounce back and hold onto a clean sheet.
